A long, long, long time ago....... as these stories unfold......
there lived a dragon, high up in his ivory tower where everything worked with precision
and nothing was left to chance. Mind you he didn't need all the usual mod-cons that we humans needed
All he had to do was think what he would like or do next........ and it happened !!

Well this particular day he was in a funny sort of mood..... not really down, or sad, or unhappy, or anything....
just funny...... He couldn't put a finger on it...... you know we all have them .... well he did this day....

Oh! dear......I've not told you his name have I?
It was Barnaby, well to be precise......
Barnaby Marmaduke Dragon, or BMD to his friends...

Anyway as I was saying.... he was in a funny mood.....as he walked about his ivory tower thinking
"What am I feeling? I'm not sad, or blue, or happy, or angry...... I am none of those things....
This is really strange..... oh! dear me!"
And then it struck him .... he was feeling lonely.

You see he lived all alone in this big ivory tower.
He had everything his heart desired up until now...
because all he needed to do to make himself comfortable
was to just think of what he needed and it would happen.
Well he thought to himself if that is what I want
I will just think of something to keep me company and stop me feeling lonely....

This gave him a bit of a boost and he trotted off to his library and settled down to read up some stories
about the dragons of yesteryear and what they did to stop feeling lonely.
He really loved to read and read all about his ancestors and how brave they were
in protecting their world from all the negative influences that abounded.
He would be so engrossed in these stories
that sometimes he would find himself right in the thick of it, so to speak.......
fighting for good with them..... throwing his flames over the earth....
so much so he would literally suddenly realise that he had torched his pet lizard
sitting beside him on his stool.....

And this is exactly what happened just then.....
With a screech from Lazlo, the lizard, Barnaby quickly blew out the flames..... and apologised....
Then sinking back into his chair..... he drew on his pipe..... and started to think.....

Just then he heard in his mind his old friend D'arcy call to him.....
Now D'arcy was an even older dragon than Barnaby and lived on the other side of the valley...
"Barnaby... are you there?
I'm coming over so would you please make sure that you have lowered your defences..
as I don't particularly care to be scrambled again."
"Oh! right" said Barnaby..... and thought about lowering his defences and just as he did.....
in waddled D'arcy looking quite dishevelled in appearance.... but trying to make the most of it....
brushing the odd bits of straw still sticking to his spikes....

"Really BMD you will have to think quicker than that....
One second more and I would have been scrambled... as it was
I had to do a quick detour via the barnyard to absolutely make sure you had lowered your defences...."
said he settling down in an easy chair..
"Right..... now what's this I hear about you feeling lonely?"

"Gosh thoughts do get around fast..... you can't keep anything to yourself these days!
Yes, well, mmm.... I think that is what I am feeling....
but its is getting better by the moment" said Barnaby... offering his guest some refreshments
from his suddenly appearing trolley filled with sandwiches, cakes, and sweets and drinks....

"Well I distinctly thought you were feeling something" said D'arcy finishing off his fourth sandwich
and helping himself to a large slice of cream cake
"You were sounding wretched and so I thought I would pop over and cheer you up"
he continued with his mouth full of cake
"You know this is delicious..... I haven't tasted something like this for quite a while.
Anyway have you found any remedies from the old masters that can help you?"

"Well not exactly, D'arcy......
I started out with good intentions but a little story caught my eye....
it was about Old Grandfather Rupert..... remember?
The time he was overcome by those horrible little beastly gremlins....
Oh! I can't remember where they came from.....
but they were utterly horrible, and beastly.... and made life so unbearable for all the dragon kingdom....
Anyway.... Old Grandfather Rupert
had a trick or two up his sleeve and soon made short work of them
I was so engrossed in the story I'm afraid I torched old Lazlo here..... and that's when you came in "

"Well there you go.... you became so taken with Grandfather Rupert's tales
that you completely forgot your own feelings...
what a turn up..... mind you I'm not in the least surprised....
happens to me all the time" replied D'arcy quaffing his drink down..
all those sandwiches and cakes really did make one thirsty.....
not to mention all the huffing and puffing dragons do....

At this point in the procedure they heard a clanging at the front gates......
mind you it was at a distance and normal ears wouldn't have picked it up..... but dragons did...
"Are you there Barnaby? Really this is too much.....
do you have to have this elaborate defence system in place all the time?
I just wanted to drop in and show you something....." They heard a voice say......
it was his cousin Poncenby Dragon who lived even further than D'arcy....
Dragons liked to spread out.......
that way they could exercise their powers without restrictions....
like flame throwing...and lashing of tails...

Barnaby thought about his defences.....
and no sooner had he done so then in straddled Poncenby
nursing something in a blanket....

"Oh my! Its getting more and more difficult BMD to reach you....
you know.... oh! my I'm out of breath!" said Poncenby
collapsing into the nearest chair that suddenly appeared in the most strategic spot for collapsing......
The other two dragons came closer trying to see what it was that Poncenby had cradled in the blanket....
they couldn't for the life of them imagine what it could be.....it was completely covered....
And then they heard a few little snuffles and snorts and grumps and groans....

And out popped a little head......
looking highly indignant at the treatment received during his recent transportation...
He was trying to belch fire but all he could achieve were sparks that flew and then fizzed out
making him feel and look ridiculous which didn't help his sense of dignity......

"Well now...... what have we here?" said D'arcy with a drawl.....
"Poncenby old man..... where have you been and what have you got there?"
"You'll never believe this..... never in a million years....." replied Poncenby....
"This little creature was found by my housekeeper at the gates....
and when she cast her eye over the bundle.... he was in her arms...
So she had no option but to bring him in...."

While the older dragons were talking.......
the new arrival drew himself carefully out of the blanket...
stood on his hind legs..... which got him as far as D'arcy's ankle....
. and immediately started to belch fire at it....
making D'arcy suddenly very uncomfortable and prickly.....
he absentmindedly tried to swat his ankle and in doing so
knocked the little fellow for a loop........
whoooosh he flew.... turning somersaults over the rugs....
and straight up and onto Barnaby's lap.......... kaplonk...... he went..... and there he sat!

Well Barnaby was bemused by all of this.......
and looked and looked at this little visitor.....and thought....
"Ahhhhhhhh! How funny..... how strange..... how sweet...... this little creature was......"
and a lovely warm feeling came all over him...... and he hadn't felt like this for such a long, long time....
well, actually he found it really hard to remember when it was.....

"You really are an adorable little fellow and full of spunk I can see" he thought.....
"we can't just let you be..... you've got to have a home,
and lots of love, and lots of food, and lots of learning, and lots of fun
so that you can grow up to be a fantastic dragon...."

Well hearing these thoughts..... the other two dragons looked at each other knowingly......
the magic had been cast.... and the remedy found.....
Barnaby was no longer lonely.....
